Chief Minister of Tamilnadu Jayalalithaa got 4 years prison term on corruption charges. Verdict announced today after 18 years of trail.

ENARADA, Bangalore, September 27, 2014

Fans of ‘Amma'(as Jayalalithaa is fondly called ), had brought sweets and Crackers to celebrate with the hope that their leader will be victorious in the court case related to amassing wealth. But it turned out be a disappointing day for them as the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa,  is convicted in the 18 year old disproportionate asset case and she is charged with four years jail term.

Apart from jail term she is slapped with a fine of whopping INR 100 Crores.  Three other co-accused, Sasikala and her relatives V.N. Sudhakaran and J. Illavarasi were also found guilty.

In a dramatic development at a special court in Parappana Agrahara, judge Michael Cunha’s verdict came in the evening, just few minutes before closing time of court.

During her first tenure as the Chief Minister between 1991-1996, Jayalalithaa had declared that she would take only Re.1 as her salary. But according to case details, her assets grown to around 66 crore during 1996  from declared 3 crore during 1991.

On June 14, 1966, then Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy who is now BJP leader, had filed a complaint before principal sessions judge challenging Jayalalitha had amassed wealth illegally. As it was  a sensitive issue, case was going slowly by recording statements of many people. In 1996 Jayalalithaa’s party All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) voted out of power due to corruption charges and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) got the power to rule the state.

When AIADMK returned to power in 2001, several witnesses were afraid to give statements and some of them were willing to distance themselves from the case. Seeing the trend,  DMK leader K.Ambazhagan approached apex court and the case was transferred to Bangalore from Chennai.

Following the news reports of violence and Bhundh across Tamil Nadu, Bus services to Tamilnadu was cancelled by Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation. Social media too occupied discussions about future political  course of ‘amma’ who has earned a huge popularity in Tamil Nadu by providing subsidy based schemes for poor people.

As Jayalalithaa has to step down, who will become next CM of Tamil Nadu is the big question.
