Tiger and leopard dies in Mysore Zoo

ENARADA,Mysore, August 20,2013:

The centaury old Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, popularly known as Mysore zoo has lost 19 year old tiger and 12 year old male leopard today.

According to Chief Conservator of forests and Executive director of the zoo B P Ravi, both the animals died due to illness and old age.

He said Male tiger Madhukeshwara which was brought from Tiger & Lion Safari, Tyavarekoppa, Shimoga  during 2002 was suffering from tumor in hip region since 3 months. The cancerous tumor was removed two months back,however the tiger did not recover, despite treatment. Lab results received from IAH&VB, Bangalore, had confirmed the malignant cancer (Fibro sarcoma).

With his death, the number of tigers housed in the zoo have gone down to thirteen. Madhukeshwara had not fathered any cubs in his twelve years in the conservation centre. The tiger died today afternoon.

A male leopard Pushkar has died this evening . The leopard was not feeling well for the last five days and also did not consume anything. Despite treatment, the animal died due to constipation and senility.
Details will made known after the postmortem examination of both the animals, he added.
