Dig up

ENARADA, Chamarajanagar, April 19, 2014

News of Frog Weddings, marry off donkey, Special prayers or conducting yajnas to invoke the rain god may be common but in a rare incident to appease Rain God, villagers today exhumed the body of a seer who died four years ago.

Narasamangala Village, about 30 km from here, had not received rains despite monsoon bounty in the state during 2013. Villagers believed that wrong place of burial of dead body of Seer had ‘driven’ the rains away from the village.

A village elder said it was an ‘unanimous’ decision as the village remained parched and rains failed to arrive for a long time.

On a tip off, officials arrived to stop the people from carrying out digging, but before officials turned up everything was over, sources said.

Madappa Swamy, who worked in Devanour Math in Nanjangud taluk of the district, was one among junior seers for several years. Later, he decided to marry and settle down in his native village.

Under the Veerashaiva Community, even certain religious persons, who are not heads of the Mutts, can get married and continue to serve the people of the faith.

Seer had died in 2010 and was buried amid religious rites. His wife and children still live in the village.

Madappa Swamy’s son Mahesh, who works in Bangalore in a private firm, said the family was against it and told the ‘innocent’ villagers that it was only a superstitious belief, but still the villagers acted according to their blind belief.
