“Considering that electronic products are imported in large measure even when compared to petroleum products, we need to strive to strengthen the industry at all levels by taking advantage of favourable government policies”, said Dr. R.K. Tyagi, Chairman, HAL while addressing a two-day Strategic Electronic Summit here.

Over 100 organisations are participating with 35 exhibition booths at Bangalore International Exhibition Centre. The theme of the summit is “Make India – Dream to reality – transforming the Indian Strategic Electronics Eco-System”.

Dr. Tyagi pointed out that India contributes a meagre 0.5% of global electronic production. But the industry has showed huge promise in 2013-14 by clocking nearly Rs 14,000 crore production mark by recording 15% growth when compared to the previous year, he said.

“It is possible to achieve the self-reliance in this sector by adopting defined technologies and by creating conducive environment for growth. This industry is crucial as future warfare is unthinkable without electronic systems in place”, Dr. Tyagi added.

He also stressed that indigenous capability in the sector will grow by giving thrust on R&D. “Small and medium industries too have a big role to play in achieving self-reliance by taking advantage of the government policies which seek to support defence manufacturing in India”, he added.

The key features of the two-day event include technology sessions and buyer-seller meetings. The Electronic Industries Association of India (ELCINA) has been holding the meet since 2010.
