The events in the current week appeared to give the impression that the Indian political class seems to have been infected with foot in mouth disease considering the events ranging from BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj describing Nathuram Godse, the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi a patriot to External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj wanting to be make Gita a national scripture and the topping in the entire event was what was described as “ghar wapasi” or “home coming” of the conversions in Agra to Hinduism.

Though the BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj may have apologized but the Congress and other opposition did not appear to be in a mood of forgiveness.

However, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley who is considered very close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the prime minister has taken note of these developments but this did not appear to cut much ice for the prime minister’s silence on the issues was indeed deafening.

Another source of embarrassment for the BJP-led government was the statement of Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik who came out strongly in support of constructing the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

However, despite all these incidents and obstruction of parliamentary proceedings by opposition parties, government claimed that the ongoing Winter session of Parliament is set for a record performance  in transaction of legislative business. The government said that while the Lok Sabha has already passed 13 Bills in the first three weeks of the session ending on December 12,  the Rajya Sabha has cleared nine of them.

But, the last week of the parliamentary session is indeed going to be a very crucial one for the BJP-led government since the controversial Coal Bill passed by Lok Sabha is to come in Rajya Sabha where the ruling NDA does not have the numbers and the opposition appears to be united on the bill to not support it.

In fact the Coal Bill brought together the strangest of partners – Trinamul Congress and the left parties – arch rivals in West Bengal.

However, the BJP has managed to bring the Congress on its side on the Insurance Bill with the Congress claiming that it was “our baby (Insurance Bill),” and BJP leaders are hoping that a similar view prevails on the coal bill.

Conversion issue in Agra

The conversions in Agra brought out the contradiction in the opposition Samajwadi Party as its leader Mulayam Singh Yadav said that the conversions were more a media report and not really true but later it joined the other opposition parties in the Lok Sabha and walked out to the reply given by Parliamentary Affairs Minister M.Venkaiah Naidu.

The fourth week of winter session of Parliament beginning  December 15 assumes importance with the government proposing to move reform oriented Bills like The  Insurance Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2008  and The Companies (Amendment) Bill, 2014 to be taken up for consideration and passing in both the Houses of Parliament.

Meanwhile, Jaitley besides being the Finance Minister who also holds charge of Information and Broadcasting has given more responsibilities to his Minister of State and former Olympic silver medallist Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore who has been answering all the questions in Parliament pertaining to the Ministry.

Jaitley has also given greater responsibility to  Minister of State for Finance Jayant Sinha showing that the government is keen on building up the second line too.

Even as the political class were fighting their battles, there was the incident involving the call taxi Uber and coinciding just ahead of the first anniversary of December 16 rape incident in the capital has once again raised the heckles of civil society and there have been protests in the capital and clearly the Delhi Police having been under pressure arrested the driver within days and a whole lot of skeletons tumbled out of the cupboard as it was found that the taxi driver had been not only acquitted in an earlier rape case but that he had also got forged police clearance certificate enabling him to take the job.

It only brought out the racket that is prevalent in the fake market not only fake driving license or fake ration cards but also fake character certificates issued by police.
