The beef controversy has once again kicked up in Karnataka with both Congress and BJP trading barbs at each other. On Monday, Congress MLC VS Ugrappa threw a challenge to BJP asking it to stop the beef exports. His comments came in the back drop of a controversial statement made by RSS senior leader Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat.

Speaking to eNarada, Mr Ugrappa said, “Why is BJP making so much noise about the beef. Food habits are personal and we should respect it. If the BJP and RSS are so concerned about bovines, then they should immediately stop the export of beef.” In fact, Ugrappa was critical of Mr Bhat’s comments where the latter had said that CM Siddaramaiah wouldn’t hesitate to eat even his mom’s flesh.

Mr Ugrappa’s comments have been based on the recent reports which state that India has the world’s largest bovine population with 304 million cattle and buffalo. The beef and Indian buffalo meat production had reached 4.25 million tonnes cwt in 2017 and was expected to go up to 4.3mt cwt.
