The Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), Mysore is preparing ready to eat food to supply for people who are stranded in Uttarakhand  tragedy.

The Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL) was established in December, 1961 under the aegis of Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), Ministry of Defence, Government of India, at Mysore especially to cater to the strategic operational requirements of our Services and to provide logistical support in the area of Food supplies and varied food challenges of Indian Army, Navy, Air force and other paramilitary forces.

According to  DFRL director Dr. Harsha Vardhan Batra  that the production would start from Friday and the first consignment is likely to be dispatched mid next week, tentatively on June 26.

“Though we have staff shortage and our production units busy producing rations for the armed forces, we will ensure at least one tonne of food is cooked by next Wednesday. Be it war time or humanitarian crisis, DFRL has always extended its helping hand”, Dr. Batra said.

On the kind of food that will be prepared, Dr. Batra said after considering general tastes of North Indians the lab has decided to cook three-varieties of ready-to-reconstitutable food, namely Suji Halwa, Upma and Vegetable Palav. The products will be come in 1 kg packets. And, the best thing about reconstitutable food is the bulk will increase by three times when mixed with water. These products are light in weight, easy to transport and highly nutritious.

Dr. Batra said the DFRL had supplied rations for the Antarctica expedition, mountaineering squads to Kanchenjunga, Nandadevi, Mount Everest and the Indo-Soviet Space Mission. It also provided assistance during calamities such as the Orissa super cyclone, the Latur earthquake, flash floods at Leh, and the 2004 tsunami, he added.

As more than 500 people are dead and  50000 people are stranded due to floods and landslides triggered by torrential monsoon rains, Food is the need of the hour.

“556 bodies have been recovered and there are reports that more could be buried under the debris,” the Uttarakhand CM Vijay Bahuguna told a news channel. This reveals the gravity of the situation.

It can be recalled that Karnataka Government has taken initiative in rescue operation by opening a help centre in Uttarakhand. Government has already  sent a team of senior officers, Minister and doctors to Uttarakhand to rescue thousands of people from Karnataka who are struck in the tragedy.
