Govt proposes central minority university at Srirangpatna

New Delhi, May 27, 2013:

Ministry of Minority Affairs has proposed the establishment of Six Central Universities at places pre-dominantly inhabited by the minority population namely, Murshidabad (West Bengal), Malappuram (Kerala), Kishanganj (Bihar), Ajmer (Rajasthan), Srirangpatna (Karnataka) and Raebareli (Uttar Pradesh).

The expert committee of prominent educationists, headed by Professor S. Thorat, former Chairman, UGC, and presently the Chairman ICSSR, has unanimously recommended setting up of universities in the areas pre-dominantly inhabited by minority population so that more and more youths from minority communities can join the higher educational streams.

As a follow-up action, Ministry of Minority Affairs has taken up the matter with Ministry of Human Resource Development for a Central Legislation to establish these six Central Universities. Moreover, for the establishment of universities at Murshidabad, Malappuram and Kishanganj, the land is being arranged by Aligarh Muslim University.
