Incessant rains cause floods in parts of Udupi/Mangalore

ENARADA, Mangalore/Udupi, July 4, 2013:

Incessant rains in the coastal districts of Mangalore and Udupi has caused flooding in several places in Puttur, Sullia, Belthangadi, Bantwal  of Dakshina Kannada district.

Pople living in places near isles in Kundapur were shifted to safer places yesterday and schools and colleges were closed.

Today, July 4, a similar situation has been faced in Mangalore and as many as 300 families around in Jappinamogaru, Kudur, Bengre and nearby places have been evacuated following river Netravati swelling due to heavy downpour of the last two days.

The district administration swung into action and people were shifted to safer places with the help of fire service brigade. Fire service men were seen literally carrying children and older people in the flood affected areas to safer places.

In places like Kallapu, Patla and Bengre people stranded and residents affected were shifted to safer places.  A few houses in Maravoor were submerged as the Maravoor vented dam gates got stuck and water level exceeded the danger mark.  A few houses in Adyar-Farangipet and Pavoor islands were also affected due to floods.

As a precautionary measure the district administration has announced holidays to schools and colleges tomorrow, July 5, 2013 due to heavy rains and water logging.  Meteorological department has predicted heavy rains for the next two days.

District in-charge minister Ramanath Rai, Lok Sabha member Nalin Kumar Kateel &  MLA J R Lobo visited the flood ravaged areas and oversaw the evacuation work.
