A 22 year old medical student of Manipal University was allegedly gang raped inside the campus premises of Manipal University yesterday night June 20, 2013.
The incident has sent shock waves among people of this coastal region which is becoming increasingly unsafe to women and young girls. This shocking incident that reminds us of the rape and murder of Soujanya a student of SDM College, Ujire in October last year.
Initial reports suggested that the 4th year medical student of Manipal who is from Kerala, was sexually assaulted by an auto driver and two of his accomplices. However, Superintendent of Police Dr Boralingaiah later confirmed that the girl was gang-raped and the incident took place inside the campus premises late night yesterday.
It has come to light that when the girl was waiting outside the Manipal University library at around 11.30 pm an auto rikshaw with three men including the driver stopped near her and they allegedly pushed her inside the auto and later they gang-raped her. The girl who was staying in a flat nearby came to her room shocked and bruised and was later admitted to the hospital. She has suffered a fracture on her leg and injuries on her hands and neck and is recovering.
The police have registered a case based on the complaint filed by Jaivittal, MAHE estate Manager. The police have launched a manhunt to catch the culprits. Though the police earlier expressed hopes of nabbing the culprits based on CCTV footage, it is now believed that the incident occurred outside the CCTV coverage area and the camera might not have recorded the incident.
Udupi MLA Pramod Madwaraj who visited the hospital has asked the police to nab the culprits at the earliest. There are about 20 auto stands in Udupi and about 800 auto drivers. Though search operation is on to nab the culprits so far no arrests have been made.
The incident, that too inside the high profile Manipal University campus has certainly created a fear psychosis among students and parents alike and their fears are justified. With this incident Dakshina Kannada has added one more blot to its already tainted name.
