The fight between Lingayats and Veerashaiva supporters took an ugly turn as the Lingayata Dharma Mahasabha (LDM) filed a police complaint against Jagadguru Rambhapuri Someshwara Shivacharya Swamiji of Balehonnur Math.

Mahasabha’s state unit president Chandramouli N said that they were forced to file a complaint against Rambhapuri seer for his alleged remarks against seer Maathe Mahadevi.

Addressing journalists, Chandramouli said, “During a recent press conference, Rambhapuri seer had made a cheap remarks indicating an illicit affair between Maathe Mahadevi and Jagadguru Lingananda Mahaswamiji (first seer of Basavadharma peetha). We are hurt by such bad remarks. In fact, Maathe Mahadevi has clarified that she never met Lingananda Swamiji before she became a sanyasin. So, this makes it clear that the Rambhapuri seer is trying to tarnish the image of Maathe Mahadevi for his own gains. When a person of his stature can stoop to such a low level, we have no option but to file a police complaint against him.”

Meanwhile, LDM has also called for a separate Lingayat religion. National president of LDM, Jagadguru Channabasavananda Swami said that like Jainism and Sikhism which have branched out of Hinduism to form a separate religion, even Lingayat religion should be recognized. Citing examples of various state government gazettes issued in the past, he said that there were 38 sub-castes among Lingayats and Veerashaivas were one among the sub-sect.

Swami said, “When Basavanna popularised Lingayatism, it is true that Veerashaivism existed before him. However, being a Brahmin and rebelling against Brahminsm, Basavanna would not have accepted Veerashivism as his religion. Hence, Basavanna revolutionized Lingayatism by inducting all the other castes who were fed up of superstitions in Hinduism. Hence, we have enough proof to declare Lingayatism as a separate religion.”

LDM is organising a massive rallies of lingayats in Belagavi on August 22 and in Kalaburgi on August 26. It also set to organise similar rallies in Maharashtra on September 3.
