A group of four men in casual dress claiming to be cops attacked a toll plaza staff at Kadaballi near Hirisave on Bengaluru-Mangaluru highway at 9.30 am on Thursday.

The four men who were travelling in a jeep refused to pay toll saying that they belonged to the police department. Taking exception to this, the toll plaza staffer demanded them to show their proof of identity.

Enraged over this, the four members started abusing him and later assaulted him in full public view. The four men said that they were cops and exempted from paying the toll.

However, the staffer argued that he encountered people evading toll every day. Hence, he has been instructed by his superiors to mandatorily check the identity card. “They need to show their identity cards if they were claiming exemption for being cops. We come across fake people on a daily basis. If I don’t do my job properly, then I will be taken to task by my seniors. If I question, travellers are enraged and assault me. I am literally clueless and helpless,” he told Enarada.

The toll plaza staff have been attacked across the country. On April 19, 2015, toll booths were vandalised and one of them burnt by villagers near Hosakote when a staff member demanded toll from a localite.
