The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) expelled the senior leader and Member of the Legislative Assembly Basanagouda Patil Yatnal from the Party’s primary membership for six years.
Yatnal leveled serious corruption charges against B.S. Yeddyurappa and their family members when Yeddyurappa was the chief minister of Karnataka. Yatnal alleged CM’s family members taking bribes to sanction projects and to transfer officials.
Yatnal’s regular statements accusing Yeddyurappa of indulging in adjustment politics and neglecting ‘Hindutva principles’ created a rift in the party. The frequent allegations embarrassed party leaders and workers, and it affected the party’s image badly.
The top BJP national leaders intervened and asked Yatnal to be silent in public. Yatnal did not stop and the Central Disciplinary committee issued a show cause notice to him.
The BJP lost the assembly elections and the Congress came to power in Karnataka in May 2023. Yatnal became angry when the BJP high command appointed B.Y. Vijayendra, the son of Yeddyurappa as the President of the Karnataka unit in November 2023.
Yatnal opposed Vijayendra’s position as party chief and issued open statements expressing his displeasure about sharing power within Yeddyurappa’s family. Yatnal requested top leaders in Delhi to sack Vijayendra and replace the party chief post with anyone outside Yeddyurappa’s family. Many other BJP leaders joined the Yatnal team and B.Y. Vijayendra found it difficult to work as a team.
Noticing the unfair developments, the Central Disciplinary Committee issued a show cause notice to Yatnal again and this did not deter him.
Finally, BJP expelled Yatnal on March 26, over his repeated violations of the party discipline, despite his assurances of good behaviour and conduct in response to earlier show cause notices.
