ENARADA, BANGALORE, APRIL 13, 2014

As many as 1.6 lakh cases, including pre-litigation cases, were disposed-off in the Mega Lok Adalat, which culminated here on April 12, according to the Judge of the High Court of Karnataka Mr Justice N K Patil, who is also the Executive Chairman of the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority.

Besides, nearly 65,000 cases pertaining to Local Authorities  like Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Bangalore Development Authority (BDA), Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) and the Department of Revenue were taken up for settlement in Lok Adalats.

This is a remarkable achievement, which results in the reduction of arrears and pendency in the Courts, gives quick relief to the parties and saves money for both the public and the Government, press release said.

Mr Justice H L Dattu, Senior Judge of the Supreme Court of India speaking at the Mega Lok Adalat, organized by the High Court of Karnataka and the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority,  narrated the genesis and importance of the legal aid programmes in India and how the dream and the constitutional mandate of Justice for all was being translated into reality.

The Chief Justice of the High Court of Karnataka Mr Justice D H Waghela, who is also the Patron-in-Chief of the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority, described Mega Lok Adalat as an astounding success of the Alternative Dispute Resolution System achieved by learned Judges of the Trial Courts, Office bearers of the State Legal Services Authority and the Judges of the High Court.

The Chief Justice also emphasized the advantage and the importance of taking recourse to the alternative, easier, cheaper and faster modes of resolving individual and private disputes as well as for redressing grievances with the Government and Local Authorities. The contribution of the members of the Bar was duly acknowledged and appreciated, says an official press release.
