Cops are not just good at wielding lathi but can also play musical instruments at ease. This was once again proved during the police band concert organised at illuminated Amba Vilas Palace in Mysuru on Sunday night.

Around 500 musicians from 37 troupes from various Karnataka Police Bands enthralled the audience in different forms of music.

While the English band performed compositions of WO Keep, WO George, Johannes Brahms, Abba, Boney M, FH Reid and WH Monk, Carnatic troupe played compositions of Jayachamaraja Wadiyar, Tyagaraja and Kanakadasa.

The police band also played Hindustani music composed by S Shankar. The show concluded with all units performing the patriotic song-Saare Jahan Se Accha. Interestingly, this year’s concert had new compositions in the two-hour show (the time was extended by an hour following cancellation of various events due to drought).

So, finally, it was time to know the best bands of the day. In the big band category, KSRP fifth battalion (Mysuru) and Shivamogga’s KSRP eighth battalion won the first and second prizes respectively. In medium band, KSRP ninth battalion (Benglauru) and CR South division (Bengaluru) were the first and second winners while in the small band category, CR Central division won the first prize and DAR band (Karwar) was adjudged the second.

The Karnataka Government Orchestra, popularly known as Karnataka Police Band, owes its birth to a visionary genius Chamarajendra Wadiyar when only European army music was played.

By 1918, Nalwadi Krihnaraja Wadiyar, inducted an indigenous unit specializing strictly in Indian classical music.

The Karnataka Band has to its credit many notable Vidwats of national eminence wielding the Conductor’s baton. Apart from usual Indian style instruments, the Band also boasts of a few extremely rare Hindustani instruments like Sarangi, Navagot, Sitar, Dilruba, Issar, Balakokila and Sorabhat. Sadly, there is a dearth of musicians who are skilled in playing these instruments.

The police bands made its debut in Dasara in the 1980 and since then it has been a regular feature. All musicians have passed their senior-grade music exams and are eligible to take up lectureship at govt. junior colleges. Many of the Band’s musicians are acclaimed TV artistes. They regularly appear on Doordarshan and AIR, Mysore. ‘In the early 20’s, a separate ‘Band House’ on Mirza Road was constructed to house the band and orchestra. Separate enclosures such as the Instruments’ room, music library and an exclusive concert hall apart from other rooms were part of this magnificent structure. This building is presently used as the office of the Commissioner of Police of Mysore city.

Mysuru Dasara begins with a bang

It was a historic moment as the world famous Mysuru Dasara was inaugurated by a farmer.
Puttaiah, a 67-year old Dalit farmer from Heggadevana Kote taluk had the privilege of inaugurating the Nada Habba.

For decades, it had been a practice to invite VVIPs for the inauguration. However, this year, the State Government decided to invite a progressive farmer to do the honours.

Initially, the offer was made to Kadidal Shamaanna. Upon his rejection, the government chose Puttaiah.
Due to drought, the Dasara festivities have been a low key affair but nevertheless, the traditional fervour and grandeur has remained the same like every year.

Another highlight of Dasara was the debut of Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, who conducted his first Khas Darbar at Amba Vilas Palace and took over the Dasara festivities at Mysuru Palace.
