You might have heard or read that the rainwater trapped inside shells got condensed into pearl, and you may also be aware that it is just a myth. But do you know that the pearl cultivation is a very profitable and a good business..?

Pearl, one of the nine gemstones (Navaratnas), can be cultivated in the State on a large scale, according to Dr.B V Krishnamurthy, Assistant professor, main research center, Department of Inland Fisheries, University of Agriculture Sciences.

“It is really a noble venture to farmers. They can earn more with pearl cultivation. They have to be trained and educated in this regard” he added.

Pearls are produced in the sea naturally. They are also cultivated in many parts of our country and in other countries. It is called as fresh water pearl cultivation.

Those who have agricultural lands near Bangalore and can mot grow any food grains can use their land for pearl cultivation.  Several people have already started pearl cultivation.

All that is need for it is one acre of land and a bore well or an open well. An artificial pond will have to be created in one gunta land. Mussels or shells required for pearl cultivation are available in abundance in many water bodies of the State.

“A round foreign body, sand or small stone, should be injected into the live mussel. In order to protect itself from the foreign body, the mussel secrets calcium carbonate and covers it fully layer by layer. This later transforms into a pearl.  It takes 12 to 18 months for the formation of a pearl” Dr.B V Krishnamurthy explains.

“We have not calculated the income and expenditure required to undertake pearl cultivation. However I am very much sure that it is really profitable” he adds.

With increasing demand for pearls it for sure that pearl cultivation is really a profitable job. All that is needed is creating awareness among the farmers and support from the Government.

  1. The news item is informative. However, the following comments occurred to me on reading the news:

    Around Bangalore there is only one farmer doing freshwater pearl culture.

    It is not just any round foreign body that forms a base for pearl. It should preferable be made from the external calcareous shell of mussels/oysters.

    Sand and small stones are normally not accepted by mussels.

    ‘Insertion’ is preferred to ‘injection’

    The inserted shell bead acts as an irritant and the mussel secretes ‘nacre’ over the bead, which on getting a considerably thick coat is termed as pearl.

    Freshwater pearl culture is to be taken as an subsidiary occupation.

    Please get clarifications in advance. Thanks for your initiative to create awareness on the enterprise.

    • I was very much interested in the Pearl Harvesting since it has got many advantages and good returns as well, but had no idea as i thought it was done in sea/salt water and also saw a documentary in discovery and it sounded so tedious and thank to you sir you made it sound very simple. We have a farm of 2 acres off kanakapura road and we would like to get trained in that field. I read today in the Bangalore mirror about the harvesting and also read that a farmer is already started cultivating( located off kanakapur road ). please can you provide me the contact number as i want to visit his farm and understand the basic requirements before starting.

    • Freshwater pearl production can be started in land area as small as 50m2 in few thousand liters of water, with less investment and labour. It can be integrated with table/ornamental fish culture in existing/new water bodies of manageable size. It is better to be started on a small scale, without affecting your regular occupation. The other inputs for the enterprise viz., freshwater mussels and nuclei are not too difficult to get.

      The Inland Fisheries Unit, Main Research Station, Hebbal, Bengaluru conducts four-day hands-on Training Programme on demand basis. The programme is structured to impart both knowledge and skill to the trainees on freshwater pearl production, utilizing the established Demonstration Unit at IFU. The Batch strength is twelve, on first-come-first-served basis. Training Fees is Rs.8000, inclusive of food and dormitory accommodation.
