‘Margam Presentation’ a Bharatanatyam dance programme was presented by the second batch of P G Diploma holders of Sarsa College of Arts and Sciences at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mangalore, on Saturday, April 13, 2013.
The programme was jointly organized by Sarsa College of Arts and Sciences and Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mangalore.
Five diploma holders presented a two-hour programme with both individual and group performances, much to the delight of dance connoisseurs.
It was the first big stage performance for the five diploma holders – Sathvika Shetty, Reshma Shrinath, Shruthi Ravikumar, Parvithi Kiran and the only male among them Mohan Raj.
They came out with scintillating performances doing full justice to their newly acquired degree in Bharatanatyam.
The programme was inaugurated by veteran Bharatnatyam Guru and founder of Sri Dev Nritya Kendra Jayalaxmi Alva inaugurated Margam lighting the lamp in the presence of Dr Arathy H Shetty, Principal of Rarsa College, chief guest Laxmi M Kumaran, Dy General Manger of MRPL and Prof Dr Hima Urmila Shetty, Trustee Dr M V Shetty Memorial Trust, who presided over the function.
This has been the second programme presented by the P G Diploma holders of Sarsa College, the only such college providing P G Diploma in fine arts affiliated to Mangalore University. Dr Araty Shetty Principal of the college says “No other university has introduced this course and it is the first of its kind from our college. Other colleges have such courses but they are not affiliated to universities. Affiliation to a university added value to the degree”.
Sarsa College of Arts and Scienes is affiliated to Mangalore University and naturally the degree has value. The PG Diploma has seven papers including one compulsory paper in carnatic music because dance requires knowledge of music, says Dr Araty.
Dr Araty says those who wish to join diploma course in Bharatanatyam need not have background of music or dance. It is enough if they have interest in dance and are prepared to work hard, she says. Sarsa College offers BA degree in fine arts i.e Bharatanatyam and Carnatic music.
Sarsa College also offers degree course and has one subject in fine arts i.e carnatic music or Bharatanatyam. From the next academic year the college is planning to start B.Com where interested students will have the opportunity to get training in Bharatanatyam.
Dr Araty says that usually students hesitate to opt for degree in Bharatanatyam because they feel it limits their scope career wise. But B.com with Bharatanatyam as a subject would be an enticing proposition, she declares.
Sarsa College of arts and sciences was started in 2007 and is sponsored by Dr M V Shetty Memorial Trust. The college has a sprawling campus at Vidyanagar in Kavoor, Mangalore.
