Mangalore, March 11, 2013;

For the Congress it is double whammy as it gained absolute majority in both Mangalore City Corporation and in Udupi Town Municipality elections completely annihilating the BJP in its traditional stronghold.

Though these results were expected to come out with some surprises the clean sweep by the Congress was unexpected.

It has added to the woes of the BJP which is already saddled with numerous problems on hand.  Of the seven ULB’s it managed to gain majority only in Sullia TP leaving the rest six ULB’s to the Congress, thus completing its humiliation.

In Mangalore City Corporation it was the reversal of seats between the Congress and BJP as Congress this time won 35 as against the 20 seats it won in 2007.

The BJP managed to win 20 as against the 34 seats it won in 2007.  Surprisingly the JD(S) increased its tally from one seat to two.  CPI (M), independents and others managed to win three seats.   The only surprise for the Congress has been the defeat suffered by its candidate former mayor Gulzar Banu who was defeated by Social Democratic Party of India candidate Ayaz by a margin of 645 votes.

While the Congress camp is elated and is in a euphoric, having performed beyond its own expectations, the BJP is sulking.  It has to do some soul searching at the earliest  considering that the assembly elections are round these elections have already set the trend for the future course of action for the political parties.
