Mangalore/Udupi/Kundapur
March 11, 2013;
In a major setback for the ruling BJP in Udupi which is considered as its traditional stronghold, the Congress romped home to victory in Udupi Municipal Corporation winning 22 seats out of the 35 wards.
The BJP came a distant second by winning 12 seats and one seat has been bagged by others. For the BJP which had won 28 out of the 35 seats in 2007 these election results have come as a big setback and surprise. These results are an indication demonstrating that BJP’s strength is on the wane in these coastal districts of Mangalore and Udupi.
As per the initial trends of the results of the Mangalore City Corporation election it is thumbs down for the ruling BJP as the Congress has won 13 seats as compared to BJP’s 10 seats in the 60 wards. Two seats have gone to others including an independent. For the BJP which had won 34 seats, this is a big shock as the Congress has made a grand come back much to the chagrin of BJP which was trying hard to retain its control over the MCC.
In Kundapur out of the 23 wards BJP has won 13, Congress 9 and two seats have gone to CPI (M).
