ENARADA, Bengaluru, January 30, 2015
For the last two days, the Bruhut Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is on a mega drive clearing encroachments on footpaths in Bengaluru.
It may appears as BBMP has woken up to the problems faced by pedestrians but the real motivating factor is the court order which has given a clear direction to remove encroachments.
The High court in WP no. 14596/2013 & 13731/2013 instructed BBMP to clear footpaths from encroachments, ‘All unauthorised encroachments, constructions and obstructions either temporary or permanent on the existing footpaths shall be removed without notice, within a period of three months, in exercise of the powers under Section 288- D of the Karnataka Municipal Corporation Act, 1976.’

Speaking to Enarada.com, Nagesh Reddy, Assistant Executive Engineer, BBMP, Srirama mandira ward said the drive will continue till clearing all the obstructions on the footpath.
“It is a national waste as all projections including steps, railings, shelters and signboards are being removed but there is no other way. Building owners should understand that they make provisions for steps within their area and not take the space meant for pedestrians for granted,” said Nagesh Reddy.
