Mangalore, Feb 19 : Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy along with other like-minded organizations is making concerted efforts to impress upon the authorities in Delhi to include Tulu in the 8th schedule of the constitution.  As part of these efforts,  they are planning to organize Tulu Siri, a Tulu Conference in Delhi on February 24, 2013,  at Delhi Kannada School in Lodhi  Estate, to urge upon the authorities concerned to give  due recognition to Tulu by including it in the 8th schedule, Umanath A Kotian, Chairman of Tulu Sahitya Academy said in a press conference.

The event comprises cultural programmes, food mela and exhibition giving a glimpse of the rich culture and tradition of Tulu to the assembled gathering.  There would also be a two-hour long live song and dance performance “Tulu Vaibhava” on Tulu Nadu which will be performed by  about 70 artistes belonging to Tuluvahini, Mulki.  Yaksha Manjusha, Mangalore would perform Tulu Yakshagana and Shashidhar Kote would give light music performance during this event.

Tulu, which is spoken by about 50 lakh people all over the world, has a history of more than 2000 years.  Kotian contends that the VIII schedule of Indian constitution has already included 22 languages.  As such students appearing for various examinations are eligible to answer in any of these 22 languages.  It would be of great help for Tuluvites if the language is included in the VIII schedule so that Tulu students can avail this benefit.

Kotian said the conference would be inaugurated by Union Minister for Petroleum and Gas Veerappa Moily, who hails from undivided Dakshina Kannada district.  Invitations have been sent to Union Minister for Labour Mallikarjuna Kharge , former Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda,  Senior Congress leader Oscar Fernandes, Union Ministe r K H Muniyappa and many other leaders, many of whom are expected to participate in the conference.
