ENARADA, Bangalore, September 22, 2013:

GE Volunteers of the Bangalore Chapter today organized Prabodhana – 12th Annual Science Fair at the GE India Technology Centre, Bangalore (GE ITC).  Over 350 students from twelve Government and NGO funded schools displayed their working models on “Agriculture – Science. Development. Sustainability” and how they help reduce human effort and increase productivity.

For the last 13 years, GE Volunteers have been spending time with students and teachers from schools in Bangalore to promote the field of science and its importance. Following the learning, these students are encouraged to showcase their understanding and knowledge of science on a platform like Prabodhana where they are exposed to a whole new world of innovation.

“Prabodhana is the flagship event by GE ITC’s Volunteers where young minds get together and display their creativity in the field of science. The fact that students from various backgrounds get to mingle and exchange ideas and thoughts with their peers from other schools is an enriching experience,” Alok Nanda, Chairman, GE Volunteers – Bangalore said.

Post the exhibition, winners were declared and the students and teachers were rewarded for their efforts. The first prize went to Ashraya School, for their project on “Value Creation from Coconut Waste” where they demonstrated how byproducts of a coconut crop can be put to use in day-to-day life. The second place was won by Mathru Foundation, whose concept revolved around “Organic Farming & Associated Eco-system”. They demonstrated through their model, the entire eco-system of practicing organic farming. The third prize was shared by Sheila Kothavala Institute for the Deaf (SKID) and the GE Volunteers Computer Literacy Initiative for College Kids (CLICK). SKID showcased urban farming, highlighting concepts like “Hanging Gardens” – a method of small scale vegetable gardening in urban areas. CLICK’s project was on “Nutrient Deficiency & Associated Effects on Crops”.

On the occasion Dr. Gopichand Katragadda, Chairman & Managing Director, GE India Technology Centre, Bangalore said “At GE ITC, innovation has always been at the forefront to create technologies that will help better lives. Seeding the idea of ‘need for innovation’ in young minds is something that we believe will help cultivate and nurture our leaders of tomorrow“.
