ENARADA, Delhi, February 8, 2014:
Following a request from Government of Karnataka and meeting held by a delegation of Delhi Karnataka Sangha, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is all set to start Kannada Chair in their Campus.
Though JNU which is operating various Chairs on different subjects, has accepted the proposal to start Kannada Chair in their university, Government of Karnataka has to shell out Crores of Rupees for the project.
“I would like to inform you that the proposal submitted by the delegation has been considered by the University and it has been decided to agree in principle for establishment of the Chair in the Centre for Linguistics, School of Language, Literature & Culture Studies” reads a letter written by Smt. Sudha Pai, Professor and Rector of JNU to Principal Secretary of the Government of Karnataka, Kannada, Culture and Information Department.
JNU in its letter dated February 7, 2014, clarified that it needs one time grant of INR 4 to 5 Crores for a professor level endowment or INR 7 to 8 Crores to create an Endowment for two positions- one Professor and One Assistant Professor.
The delegation comprising of Dr. T.S. Satyanath (Retd. Prof. Delhi University), Dr. S.Venkatachala Hegde, JNU/SAU, Dr. Purushottama Billmale, American Institute of Indian Studies, Gurgaon and Mr. Vasanth Shetty Bellare, President of Delhi Karnataka Sangha had put in lot of hard work by regularly following up the issue with both Government of Karnataka and JNU.
I really appreciate the hardships of Delhi Kannadiga scholars & eminents. Karnataka Government should take up this issue on top priority in setting up Kannada chair in JNU at soonest. I hope Kannada culture & information Department will work on it restlessly.

It is a good news.Care should be taken in choosing a good person to head the Chair.I suggest the name of sri Murigeppa who was vice chancellor of Kannada University at Hampi.
