ENARADA, Bangalore May 19, 2013:

The Kannada translation of Shri M’s book “Apprenticed to a Himalayan Master” received rave reviews during its launch on Sunday in Bangalore.

The Kannada version titled “Himalayada Guruvina Garadiyalli: a Yogiya Atmakathe” was translated by Mrs Nayana Kashyap, Assistant Professor, Dept. of English, Field Marshal K M Cariappa College, Madikeri, Karnataka.

The autobiographical book was released by Shri M, writer of the original work in English, M N Venkatachaliah, former Chief Justice of India, Lakshmisha Tholpady, scholar, philosopher, writer and poet from Udupi in Coastal Karnataka, Ajay Kumar Singh, former Director General and Inspector General of Police, Karnataka and Nithin Shah, Managing Director, Sapna Book House Pvt. Ltd.

The book which is an autobiography of Shri M is a story of his experiences spanning three and a half years of his life spent in the Himalayas with his teacher Maheshwarnath, who Shri M addresses as Babaji.

Born as Mumtaz Ali in Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, Shri M travelled to Himalayas in his teens. The autobiography narrates his spiritual journey from Thiruvananthapuram to the Vyasa Cave in the Himalayas with his teacher in search of truth and enlightenment.

Speaking on the occasion, Tolpady said, “The translator has narrated the original work in simple and straight forward language. She has captured the essence of such a difficult book successfully”.

The book traces the transformation of the writer into an accomplished yogi with profound knowledge of the Upanishads and experiences of consciousness. The message in the book is the journey of “I to Universal Self”. The writer is said to have adopted the name ‘M’ in fond remembrance of his teacher.

Recalling his difficulty in translating the same book to Hindi, Ajay Kumar Singh, former Director General of Police, Bangalore, said, “This is an unusual story which holds many meanings and also contains messages of spirituality from almost all religions. Mrs Nayana has translated it capably”. The autobiography has been translated to Malayalam and Tamil apart from Hindi and Kannada.

Kashyap, who is also the daughter of popular Kannada writer Vaidehi, shared her experiences during translation. “When I first read this book in English, I was so immersed in it that I completed reading it at one go. The simplicity in narration, the depth of Shri M’s experiences, and his relationship with his guru makes this a unique one,” she said.

The writer of the original work Shri M thanked Mrs Nayana for translating his work to Kannada and making it accessible to Kannada readers.

The book is published by Magenta Press and Publications, and Sapna Book House Pvt. Ltd. It is priced at Rs 270.

  1. This is one of the books which fascinated me so much like ‘Autobiography of A Yogi’ and ‘Living With Himalayan Masters’. Sri ‘M’ is very kind enough to give the people an insight into the Mysteries and Wonders beyond the perception of our limited five senses. Its too Authentic like Sri ‘M’ and his Lineage. A Must read for all Spiritual Seekers.
