ENARADA, Bangalore, September 3, 2014

Blindness continues to be one of the major public health problems in developing countries. With the launch of “Let Them See” contest, Sankara Eye Hospital is trying to eliminate needless blindness in India.

“Let Them See” contest is a unique initiative which is about creating one’s own short film on eye donation awareness and its impact. “Let Them See” contest is open till September 30th 2014 and the 3 Best Videos would be declared as winners on October 9th, 2014.

“Cataract and corneal diseases are major causes of blindness in countries with less-developed economies.  In India, it is estimated that there are approximately 6.8 million people who have low vision in at least one eye due to corneal diseases. Of these, about a million have bilateral involvement. It is expected that the number of individuals with unilateral corneal blindness in India will increase to 10.6 million by 2020” said, Mr. Vikram Chaudhari, CEO – Sankara Eye Hospitals, Bangalore.

“Current requirement is about 100000 corneas. Presently across India less than half of the numbers are collected, thereby creating a huge supply gap. This requires a concerted promotion and awareness drive for eye donation” said Dr. Y. Umesh, Chief Medical Officer – Sankara Eye Hospital.
