Three Million people Visited Mysore zoo

Mysore, April 4, 2013:

It was sorts of record that the  famous centaury year old Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, better known as Mysore zoo has  crossed three million visitors marks for the second consecutive year ended March 2013.

Chief Conservator of Forests and Zoo Executive Director B.P. Ravi said Mysore Zoo has received 30, 35,877 number of visitors during the financial year 2012-13 ended March this year compared to 30, 33, 893 visitors during the last year

He said the total revenue realized this year is Rs 1530 lakhs compared to last year Rs 1498 lakhs.

It was expected to receive 33 lakhs of visitors; however the target could not be achieved due to midyear dip in number of visitors due to Cauvery agitation.

However the Zoo Management is highly satisfied with huge footfalls crossing Three million mark for the consecutive second year.

He said during the year 24 animals had been acquired from other zoos, forest Department and public in the form of rescued animals. Among them male jaguar from Hyderabad, two (1:1) sloth bears from Goa Zoo and two tigers (Madesh male and Amritha female) from Nagarahole tiger reserve are important.

298 animals belonging to different species viz Striped Hyena, Common Marmoset, Cheetah, Giraffe, Hippopotamus, Indian Gaur, Pheasants, Swamp Deer, Capuchin, Asiatic Lion, wallaby, Black Swan, Saurus Crane, Deers(Spotted Deer, Thamin Deer, Muntjac, Hog Deer), Dhole, Indian Wolf, and many bird species have been born during the year reported. 345 animals belonging to different species viz;the Indian Grey Wolf, Dhole, Tiger, Indian Gaur and many birds spared to other zoos and mini zoos of our state mainly as gift.

He said that 65 animals belonging to different species viz:Gaur, Satyr Tragopan, Cheetah, Capuchin, White Tiger, King Cobra, Wallaby, Lion Tailed Macaque, Common Langur, Green Anaconda, Brown Lemur, Lion Cub, Marmoset and several birds had died during the year.

Installation of incinerator, Construction of Water Cascades and Day Crawls for tigers, New Service & emergency Gate, improvement of Visitor facilities, Improvement of Underground Drainage System, enrichment to animal enclosures and other development works have been carried out,  he added.
