Bangalore, March 31, 2013:

In a traditional military ceremony,  Major General A K Singh assumed charge as General Officer Commanding, Karnataka and Kerala Sub Area from Major General K S Venugopal who retired from the service today.

Major General Singh is a 1980 batch Officer, commissioned in the SIKH  Regiment.  An alumnus of Rashtriya Military School, Bangalore, National Defence Academy Khadakvasla, Defence Services Staff College Wellington and Army War College, Mhow, the officer has had a distinguished career.

He has successfully held various staff appointments including that of Colonel General Staff of an Infantry Division and Colonel Quartermaster General (Operation) of a Command. In his previous appointment, as Deputy Director General (Staff Duty) at Army Headquarters, the General was responsible for the staff duties aspects of the entire Army.  For his outstanding contribution to the Army, dedication and devotion to duty while in Command of of an Infantry Battalion, he was awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal.

Interacting with the media, Major General Singh outlined his priority areas as improving Civil-Military relationship, the quality of life of the serving soldiers and their families and reinforcing various welfare measures for the ex-servicemen and Veer Naaries.

The outgoing General Officer Commanding, Major General Venugopal thanked the civil administration, troops of the formation in the states of Karnataka and Kerala and the media for their yeoman support.

He said that he was relinquishing the post as a contended person having achieved numerous milestones albeit with the wholehearted support of all personnel and wished all a successful future.

He said that cautious efforts are being made by the Sub Area to get back the vast area of encroachment on the defence land in Karnataka and a Joint Survey is undertaken along with State Govt for clear demarcation of defence land.
