Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials in Mangalore busted a major gold smuggling operation by arresting one passenger at Mangalore International Airport and two more persons in Mumbai on Sunday, April 21, 2013.

Based on reliable information DRI officials arrested Jet Airways passenger identified as Meethala Kallula Parambath Nazar of Kozhikode in Kerala when he arrived at the Mangalore International Airport from Dubai.

On interrogating by DRI officials it was revealed that Meethala had concealed five gold biscuits of 500 grams under his seat in the aircraft.  Another person from Kasaragod by name Paivalike Ahamed Ali was to recover that gold from Mumbai when the flight landed there.  It is believed that since there is no customs check in domestic flights the  smuggled gold would go unnoticed.

As per the information revealed by the arrested person in Mangalore the gang is said to have smuggled gold by hiding under the aircraft seat about 30 times operating from different airports between India and Dubai.

With the arrest of the three of the gang DRI officials have busted the novel method used by smugglers to smuggle the yellow metal.
