ENARADA, MYSORE July 28,2013:

In accordance with religious beliefs, a sea of humanity witnessed the Vardhanti  Utsava (Annual Celebrations of birthday of the deity) of Goddess Chamundeshwari atop chamundi hills, today.

Special pujas commenced at 8 am at the temple.

A gold-plated palanquin was specially brought from the Amba Vilas Palace.

The presiding deity Chamundeshwari’s idol was installed in the palanquin with traditional pujas by the Temple Head Priest Shashishekar Dikshit.

Ritual followed by aarthi by to the deity by Pramodadevi Wadiyar, wife of Srikanta Datta Narasimharaja Wadiyar, the scion of the royal family.

Vardhanthi observed on the Revathi nakshathra day of Krishna Paksha in the month of Ashada. In fact it was said that it marks the day when the erstwhile ruler Mummadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar installed a Utsavamurthi (idol’s replica) in the sanctum sanctorum.

Later, the palanquin was carried around the external periphery of the temple in a colourful procession.  A traditional 26-member Palace Karnatak music troupe accompanied.

This year, what was remarkable was the immaculate arrangements made by the district administration to cope with the rush of devotees visiting the hills. “We never had such a crowd about four or five years ago. But the growing popularity of Chamundi Hills as a place of religious and tourist interest has resulted in an unprecedented surge of people since the last two or three years,” said a temple official.

A group of voluntary workers had camped here the previous night to prepare “prasada” for the devotees while special services were operated by the KSRTC from all over Mysore and surrounding regions.
