Mysore, March 24, 2013:
With assembly elections ahead and the recent naxal activities in the state particularly on the bordering areas of Kerala and Tamilnadu, the top cops of three states met here which discussed the strategies to tackle in their respective region.
IGP (Southern Range) Dr. K. Ramachandra Rao, who had organised the strategy meet, said that the inter-State Tri-Junction (Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala) had been organized in the wake of sighting of naxals in Kodagu and Hassan districts recent days ahead of elections and added that naxals had been sighted ten times in Karnataka since October 2012 which was something new.
The IGP further said that as Kodagu is bordering Kerala, suspect naxals who are active in the region, were moving between the three States through forests and added that he convened the meet to seek co-ordination of TN and Kerala Police as there was an urgent need for joint efforts to effectively check naxal activities.
Seeking the cooperation of Kerala and TN Police to share any information and intelligence report with regard to naxals with Karnataka Police, he said that the agency tackling naxal activity in Karnataka is known as Anti-Naxal Force while it was called Special Task Force and Thunderbolt in TN and Kerala respectively.
Nearly 150 officers including three IGPs from TN, two IGPs from Kerala attended the meeting which held at Infosys campus yesterday along with their subordinates from Civil, Intelligence and Internal Security Police wings.
Forest officials also exchanged information about the naxal activities in their respective jurisdictions. Power Point presentations by top officers on how to combat naxalism, thematic discussion on important issues in combating naxalism was also held where all delegates gave inputs based on their vast experience and expertise.
ADGP (Law and Order) Bipin Gopalakrishna, who inaugurated the meet, explained about naxalism in Karnataka and efforts made by the Government and the Police to contain their activities. He also highlighted the need for cooperative strategies and to create separate a structure within the Police department to combat naxalism.
SP R. Dileep, who is also the Nodal Officer and other top officers, gave a presentation on ways to combat naxalism in the presence of City Police Commissioner K.L.Sudheer and others.
