Karnataka Government has decided to provide free laptops to all the economically backward students studying in the first year engineering, general degree and polytechnic courses.

However, the rider is that these students should be studying either in Government and aided colleges. The decision to this effect was taken in the state cabinet meet on Wednesday.

According to Law Minister TB Jayachandra, the free laptop scheme is set to benefit around 2.5 lakh students, while it would cost Rs 300 crore to the state exchequer.

It may be recalled that the Siddaramaiah had announced in his budget speech this year about giving away free laptops. In his budget speech, he had said that the students who have just passed their senior secondary examination and are getting admissions into colleges in 2017-18 academic year would be eligible for free laptop scheme.
