CM Siddaramaiah canvassing for Congress candidate in Periapatna Assembly Constituency

Bangalore , May 27, 2013:

The  stage is set for periyapatna assembly elections on May 28.  The results will have little bearing on the newly formed government in the state.

In the last minute efforts to woo the voters, the leaders of political parties started door-to-door canvassing.

Out of the 224 constituencies , elections held for 223 constituencies on May 5 and the election to Periyapatna Assembly constituency  was postponed to May 28, following the death of BJP candidate Sannamoge Gowda. There are eight candidates in the fray. However, KJP  and SP candidates   H C Basavaraj and Narayan  were retired from the contest in favour of congress .

The election results  will not make any impact on the ruling  congress party. However, the opposition parties JD-S and BJP   who have locked together with 40 seats, wanted to win the periyapatna seat to claim the opposition party status  in the assembly.

The congress party lead by chief minister Siddramaiah and his ministerial colleagues conducted number of road shows and meetings in the constituency for the victory of  their candidate K Venkatesh.

While JD-S state president and former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy, was campaigning for their candidate K Mahadev and completed several rounds of the canvassing in the constituency.

Bjp has not lagging behind with former chief ministers Jagadesh Shettar, Sadananda gowda and others   campaigned for bjp candidate R T Satish.

For the Congress, a victory here will ensure that its citadel in Mysore district has not been breached. It has already won 7 of the 11 Assembly seats and its tally would go up to eight — a repetition of the 2008 election results that will give a boost to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s image.

The JD (S) gain — the party has already won three seats in Mysore district and increased its tally from one seat in the 2008 elections — has come at the cost of the BJP that has suffered heavily in the district.

There are 1,62,397 registered voters in the constituency of whom 79,110 are women. There are 205 polling booths in the constituency and the authorities have deployed   officials to oversee the smooth conduct of the polls to be held from 7 am to 6 pm tomorrow.

The election commission as also arranged for webcasting of the proceedings at 11 of the 59 vulnerable booths.  About 1400 police personal have been deployed for the security arrangements.

The counting of votes will be held on May 31 at a private school in periyapatna. ENN
