Banwari Devi calls upon Women to commit to end violence against them

Mangalore, March 8, 2013;

On the third and last day of the three day programme  organized under the aegis of a forum Mahila Dourjanya Vedike and Network of Women’s Group today to mark International Women’s Day, Banwari Devi called upon women to join hand and fight unitedly against all sorts of  crimes and violence  against them.

Banwari Devi who inaugurated the event organized by like-minded organizations was speaking as the chief guest after inaugurating the convention at Karavali Utsav Ground.  The forum, a conglomeration of hundreds of like-minded organizations held a massive rally followed by a convention that called upon women to fight against the crimes faces by women.

Susheela Nada, President of Koraga Abhivruddhi Sangagala Okkuta, Kundapur, flagged off the rally from Bunts Hostel circle which congregated at Karavali Utsav grounds.    This was followed by a convention that emphasized the need for women to fight unitedly  to safeguard themselves and  their self respect.

To the assembled gathering Banwari Devi said “incidents of crimes against women have increased manifold and women should commit themselves to the task of freeing the society from such violence”.

Speaking on the occasion Susheela Nada said that the Forum of like-minded organizations decided to celebrate Women’s Day in a different way  by holding a rally emphasizing on the need to create more awareness in the society on crimes perpetrated against women.

Sukri Bommanagowda of Halakki Okkaligara Sangha, Ankola, which is a part of the forum, called upon the need to treat men and women as equals.

Writer Sara Abubakar who spoke conveyed her happiness on being a part of this convention stressing the importance of women raising their voice fighting against crimes against them.

Vasundara Bhoopathi from Karnataka writers association, Rathi Rao, Ratnamma from Garment labors union, Gowri from municipal workers union, Sharanamma from domestic workers association,  Apoline Gomes, Neela,   Geetha, Sadana Mahila Sangha, Chandini from sexual minorities community, Sukhalaxmi Suvarna, Billawa Mahila Sangha, Roop Manorama, Professor Reeta Noronha among others were present on this occasion.

The organizers said that Mangalore was chosen as the venue of this event taking into consideration and protesting against a spate of attacks on women in this part of the city in the name of moral policing.
