Conversion: Congress leader among six arrested

Nooruddin Salmar,   D K District Congress Minority Unit Chief Secretary has been arrested on charges of aiding and abetting the accused who were trying to convert one Jayanthi Nayka of Palthady in Puttur.  Nooruddin along with five other accused has been remanded to 14-days of judicial custody.  As the news of these developments began it created a tense situation in and around Puttur.

Nooruddin, who is a notary and Advocate, was caught when he was trying to help one Mohammed Althaf when they were trying escape in a car along with the girl.  The Kasargod police intercepted their car and arrested them in Perla.

A poultry trader from Ankatadka Aziz, with whom the girl is said to be in love, is suspected to be the prime accused in the case.

On February 21, a case was registered in Puttur Rural police station about the disappearance of Jayanti Naika who had left for Bellare but had not returned.  When the police had come to know she had left for Ponnani in Kerala they went to Ponnany and brought the girl back.  The girl informed the police that Aziz had paid him Rs. 10,000 and had pressurized her to convert to Islam.  She also named Rahiman, Mansoor and auto driver Manoj for helping the prime accused in her abduction and they were arrested based on her statement.
