“Nritya Sandhya”, a dance programme organized by the Dept of Kannada & Culture, Govt of Karnataka in association with Nrithya Bharathi and Mani Krishnaswami Academy, was held in the Town hall yesterday evening.

The programme received enthusiastic response from dance aficionados who had gathered in large numbers at the Town Hall to witness the performance of Guru Geetha Saralaya of Nrithya Bharathi, her daughter Rashmi Chidanand and their disciples.

It was indeed a wonderful performance of Guru Saralaya and her team who made the audience glued to their chairs as Geetha Saralya came up with a solo performance of “Padavarnam” in Kannada, which was the highlight of the programme.

Padavarnam which is an important feature of Bharatanatyam is usually performed by dancers above the age of 18.  Padavarnama is common in Tamil and Telugu languages.  But Geetha captivated the audience with this rare performance of Padavarnam in Kannada for half hour.

Padavarnama deals with the heroine asking her maid to get her the “Bhuvanasundaranga”.  The dancer in her performance tries to describe   who her Bhuvanasundaranga (Krishna) is. “Shringara is the important aspect of Padavarnam without which the dance loses its essence” says Geetha Saralaya.

The programme began at 5 pm with a talk by Prof M B Puranik on “Manasa Sarovara Yatra”.

The dance programme started at 5.30 pm   with Pushpanjali followed by Shivastuti and Ambastuti.  In Ambastuti the main protagonist was Tanvi Rao, who is all set to make her Bollywood debut with dance queen Madhuri Dixit and other dancing greats.

There was a small hiccup as Aishwarya Nithyananda  of Bengaluru who was  scheduled to give a solo Bharatanatyam performance could not perform due to ill health.  But Geetha and her disciples managed the show by filling the vacuum and   entertained the audience for three hours.  Ambastuti was followed by Danuvarna by young dancers.

The programme conclued with another wonderful performance of Tillana performed by Geetha Saralaya, Tanvi Rao and Ramya Rao to the tunes of Poorvi Raaga Roopaka Taala and the audience was thrilled to witness a breathtaking   performance by the trio.

The dance performance was equally complimented by the team from Bangalore comprising Vidwan Pulikesh Kasturi who was Natuvangam, Vidwan Ramesh Chadanga with vocals, V R Chandrashekar on Mridangam and Madhusudan on Violin.

The programme was organized in memory of the completion of 25 years of Nrithya Bharathi observed last year.

The programme began with the lighting of lamp by Raghavendra Shasthri, Shile Shile Managing Trustee of Sharavu Mahaganapathi.  Dancer Ullal Mohan Kumar, D M Majumdar, Dy General Manger of Zonal office of Corporation Bank and P P Upadhya, Managing Director of MRPL was the guests of honour.
