Students of St Ann’s Institutions of Mangalore today held a rally to express their solidarity with the family of Sowmya who was allegedly raped and murdered in Kalladka, Bantwal last week.   The students condemned the incident and demanded justice to the victim’s family.  Students from other schools and colleges also joined the students of St Ann’s students, who organized the rally to create awareness on the issue of safety of women.  About 2000 school students participated in this rally.  It may be recalled that Sowmya was a former student of St Ann’s College as she did her DEd course from here.

Asha Nayak, chairperson of the Child Welfare Department who spoke on the occasion lauded the efforts of St Ann’s and  said there is an urgent need to spread awareness to encourage  women to file cases against offenders and demand justice. She also said that women should have the  legal knowledge so that they are able to handle any situation as and when it arises.
