Report from Bangalore:
It is that time of the year where Bangaloreans are preparing in full zest for the celebration of Ganesh Chathurti.

This year in an attempt to protect the environment, NSS unit of MVJ College of Engineering in association and support from Karnataka pollution control board, organized a rally today to promote Eco- Friendly Ganesh Chaturthi.

The rally began from the college campus till the Kadugodi signal. It was a silent rally where the students had prepared slogans which said “Clay Ganesha brings gain by not causing environment pain”, “We are born to help the world and not destroy it.” and “Go Eco –Friendly this Ganesh Chaturthi.”

“The idea behind this rally is to create awareness in and around the college to use Ganeshas without any chemicals and to use Clay Ganeshas. We want to create awareness regarding the chemical hazards it causes in the environment. Throwing away garlands, plate cups and leaves in the river is also one way that they are disrespecting the festival and God and environment” says Dr. K. S. Badarinarayan, Principal of MVJ College of Engineering.

Students distributed pamphlets with guidelines about how the society can go eco friendly this Ganesh Chaturthi. Some of the guidelines were:

1.  To use small Ganesha idol made out of clay,

2. Do not immerse idols’ in well, lakes or river, because it affects the underground drinking water. Instead immerse idols in either tank, mobile immersion tanks or at designated places.

3. Do not burst cracker, the smoke pollutes the environment

4. Do not throw Garland, cups and plates in the river, use garbage carrying vehicles to dispose of them.
