Manipal gang rape case: All three acused arrested

Enarada, Bangalore, June 28:
And finally the Udupi police have succeeded in arresting all three accused in Manipal gang rape case, with two of them allegedly making a futile suicide bid.

Accused have been identified as Yogish, Hariprasad and Anand . Udupi police say it was crime by chance as it was not planned.

The breakthrough came as an accused Yogesh Shantappa Poojary (30), consumed poison and made a call to the Udupi Superintendent of Police’s office in the morning, confessing to his crime. Police located Yogesh’s house through mobile tracker and rushed him to hospital.

During interrogation, Yogesh disclosed the name of his accomplice Hariprasad Poojary (26), Yogesh and Hariprasad were auto-rikshaw drivers who had criminal records, he said. Both were arrested in Udupi.

After the two arrests, the third accused — Anand (28) — was nabbed from Sannakkibettu village near here while he was allegedly making an attempt to hang himself.

The Breakthrough:
It is reported that Sukesh Kunder, a local Congress leader has helped the Manipal police in catching the accused.

According to highly placed sources entire operation went thus: Police could not get any major breakthrough in the first three days. On the fourth day police summoned all rowdy sheeters for interrogation.

They found that Omelet Yogesh was absconding. Son of Shanthappa Poojary, Yogish is a rowdy-sheeter because of his involvement in various crimes. Police tried to contact him over phone. He was not even picking phone calls raising more suspicion.

Tracking his call history police found out that he had links with Sukesh Kunder a local Congress leader. Police took the helpf of Kunder, who tried to woo Yogesh and promised him of protection if he is connected in the case. Yogesh fell in trap, confessing to his crime.

Unaware of the trap Yogesh came down to his native Thursday morning. When he came to know that the police have detained his brother last night, Yogesh released that it is all over. He then consumed poison and made a call to police, leading to the arrest of all the three accused in the case.

“The act was not intentional nor planned. Accused had kidnapped and raped the girl under the influence of alcohol. It is a crime by chance” Police sources said.

The medical student from Kerala was kidnapped in the Manipal University campus and gang-raped while she was returning to her room on June 20, with the incident triggering outrage and protests. Twelve police teams with 200 persons were working on the case.
