Hundreds of like-minded organizations joined hands to come together to hold a silent protest and demanding an end to the   violence against women,  in Mangalore today, March 6, 2013.

These organizations have formed a forum “Mahila Dourjanya Virodi Vedike and Network of Women’s organizations”, Mangalore, in order to create awareness on the crimes committed against women.

Thousands of women wearing black clothes stood in protest from Hampankatta signal up to University College drawing attention of the public to convey the message through placards to put an end to the senseless violence against women.   A few men also joined them in this protest.   This silent protest was a part of the three-day programme initiated by the forum on the occasion of International Women’s Day on March 8, 2013.

On this occasion Madhu Bhushan from Bangalore, pointed out that the idea to protest by wearing black was inspired by the women of Israel and Palestine who wore black clothes and protested against war on the borders of the two countries.

The forum has also planned a symposium on the atrocities committed on women and its different dimensions on March 7, 2013.  The symposium will be held under the aegis of Department of Women’s Studies, Mangalore University.

On March 8, 2013 a massive rally will be held from Bunts Hostel Circle up to Karavali Utsav Maidan, which will be followed by a public meeting in Karavali Utsav Ground.  Rajasthan’s Banwari Devi, who was instrumental in the Supreme Court declaring sexual harassment at workplace as a crime, will address the public gathering.
