Air Cargo complex at Mangalore Airport inaugurated

Mangalore, March 18, 2013:

The much awaited air cargo complex, the long felt need of exporters and importers of Mangalore region was inaugurated today, March 18, 2013 by Union minister for civil aviation Ajith Singh at the old airport terminal at Bajpe.  With this, Mangalore Airport has been formally named as International Airport.

Speaking on the occasion Ajith Singh pointed out that the new air cargo complex has about 13400 sq meters for international cargo and about 1,100 sq meters for domestic cargo.  He also pointed out that the complex has an annual capacity of 5000 metric tons of international import cargo and 13,000 metric tons of export cargo apart from 18,000 metric tons for domestic in-bound cargo and 21,000 metric tons for domestic out-bound cargo.

He also pointed out that among other plans for improving the airport he said plans are on the anvil to extend the runway to provide a total length up to 3,400 meter to enable operations of large aircrafts.  He also stated that over the years Airport Authority of India has invested about Rs. 250 crores and work worth 1000 crores is in progress.

On the occasion former director of Airport M R Vasudeva was felicitated for his untiring contributions in the modernization of the Mangalore Airport.

Union Minister for Petroleum and Nagural Gas,  Veerappa Moily,  K S Venu Gopal, Minister for state for civil aviation, senior Congress leader Oscar Fernandes, MP Jayaprakash Hegde, MLAs U T Khader and Abayachandra Jain among others were present on the occasion.
