All women team stage stellar yakshagana performance

In a first of its kind of performance in Mangalore an all women team of 40 performed Yakshagana performance at Town Hall today.

The performance was held to mark the 5th anniversary of city based Yaksharadhana Kala Kendra, Urva.  Being a Sunday, the programme attracted a sea of crowd to Town hall to watch the performance of the all women team.

Needless to say it was a time well spent watching the performance as the all-women team lived up to the expectations by giving a stellar performance. They demonstrated they are capable of giving a yakshagana performance on their own just like their male counterparts.

Many Yakshagana lovers thronged to the Town Hall out of curiosity and some to just to evaluate the performance of female artistes vis-à-vis with that of the males.

The packed audience at the Town Hall demonstrated the enthusiasm generated by the event among the public.

Apart from artistes of Yaksharadhana Kala Kendra hobby artistes also participated in the yakshagana both in Himmela and Mummela.  The yakshagana was directed by Rakesh Rai Adka.

The yakshagana programme began at 3.15pm which was preceded by a stage programme that included honouring of senior yakshagana artiste Leelavathi Baipadithaya and Poornima Yatheesh Rai.

Leelavathi was conferred with “Yakshakalaradhaki” and Poornima Yathish Rai, Director of Mahaganapathi mahila Yakshagana mandali was conferred with “Yuva Yakshakalaradhaki” title for their contributions to Yakshagana.

Prof M L Samaga, President of Karnataka Yakshagana Bayalata Academy presided over the function.
