Niddodi, May 17, 2013;

In a move that might send a strong message to the government,  villagers of Niddodi , in Dakshin kannada District, gheraoed a central team of officials who visited the place for inspection of the proposed 4000 megawatt ultra mega thermal power project at Niddodi.

The villagers on learning that the central team was visiting the site blocked the road when the team led by Central Electrical Authority Officer M S Puri was returning from the site after inspection.  He was accompanied by team members Mangalore Asst Commissioner Sadashiva Prabhu, Chief Engineer of KPTCL Lakshman, MESCOM Executive Engineer Jagadish and KIADB Land Acquisition Officer Nagaraj.

Asst Commissioner Sadashiva Prabhu  tried to pacify the agitating crowd saying the team had not come only to study the distance between the site of the plant, the Western Ghats, the port and the rail route.

Mr Puri assured the villagers that they had come to review the geographical condition and assured the villagers that they would be taken into confidence before taking any measures about the proposed thermal power plant.

A team led by Joachim Correa President of Kallamundkur Jilla Panchayat appealed to the visiting team to shelve the project as it would lead to displacement of hundreds of farmers relying on agriculture for their livelihood.

It may be recalled that the locals are firmly opposing the proposed mega thermal power plant coming up at Niddodi.
