Sprinter Anand Shetty dies in accident

A road accident in Kotekar has snapped away the life of international athlete Anand Shetty who passed away in a KMC hospital on Tuesday, May 21, 2013.

The accident had occurred on May 18, 2013 when a KSRTC bus had rammed into the car near Kotekar in which Anand was travelling with his wife and daughter.  His wife and daughter also suffered grave injuries in the accident and are recuperating in the hospital.

Anand Shetty, who started out as a talented Kabaddi player, went on to represent the country in many national and international events in junior and senior levels in sprint events.  He was a national sprint champion who went on to win a sprint double at the senior level in the open nationals held in Delhi in 1982 and went on to win once again a double the next year in the meet held at Jamshedpur.

He specialized in short distance races, like 100 and 200 Metres, and  was a seven-time former national sprint champion. At the international level Anand Shetty represented the country in Asian games and many other meets.

Anand Shetty was one of the founder –members of the Bangalore Sports Club, a not-for-profit organization set up with the objective of promoting track and field events among school children in Bangalore.

The Bangalore Sports Club president , Abhay Jain, said “We’ve lost one of our finest athletics coaches. He was a dedicated and committed coach, mentor and above all, a good human being.”
