ENARADA, Mysore, September 5, 2013: 

The ruling Congress party with highest number of members was made to lose both the Mayor and Deputy Mayor’s post to JD(S) which formed an alliance with BJP.

N.M. Rajeshwari Somu of Ward No. 33 from the JD(S) has been elected as Mayor while V. Shailendra of Ward No. 9, also from the JD(S) was elected as the Deputy Mayor.

The Mayor’s post was reserved for a General (Woman) category while Deputy Mayor’s post was reserved for an SC candidate.

Out of 75 only 68 votes were polled as few independents, Congress Lok Sabha member A H Vishwanath and JD(S) MLC Narayanaswamy were absent.

Rajeshwari got 39 votes while her rival Manjula Manasa of the Congress polled 29 votes. Shailendra was elected with 39 votes defeating his rival Bhagyavathi of the Congress who polled 32 votes.

Congress party has 22 Corporators, while JD(S) 20, BJP 12, SDPI 2, BSR and KJP 1 each and 7 Independents in the 65 member Council. Apart from the 65 votes, Congress had the additional votes of one MP and 3 MLAs. The JD(S) had three MLCs and one MLA while BJP had two additional votes of their MLCs.

Regional Commissioner Ms M V Jayanthi V Gupta, who is also the Election Commissioner conducted the elections.
